J and The City...

a milli-a milli-a milli-a milli-a milli...

i had my vacation from work last week and used it to take a road trip to my favoritest city (besides montreal), New York. i went down solo cause i didn't want to drag somebody to do stuff i wanted to do. and i thought i would appreciate the city more on my own. my intentions were pretty much standard tourist stuff, but more along the lines of museums and art. i had my heart set to check out all the art galleries in Manhattan but as i came to realize, even with a week's worth of time, it's impossible. after a couple of days, my body was tired, my feet raw from all the walking. and when your body is hurting, your mind is distracted so i couldn't absorb the culture as i would have liked to. i had to limit my sight seeing and actually take breaks to sit down and drink water. my plans consisted of driving down to my cousin's house outside of new york in rockland county to park my car. i spent the weekend with his family then i would stay in Manhattan for the week at a hostel. aside from my accommodations, i purchased a ticket booklet called CityPass that visits 6 attractions for the price of one. The attractions were the empire state building observatory, museum of natural history, guggenheim museum, the metropolitan museum of art (MET), museum of modern art (MOMA), and the statue of liberty. all this for $80 bucks. i was thinkin this lineup was just a starting point for my itinerary, but it turned out to be the only items on it. these attractions took a lot more of my time and energy than i had planned. but i was definitely satisfied. well worth it. my stay also helped hilight the similarities and difference between montreal and new york. most notably, the ladies. honestly, i fell in love every day i was there. montreal has fine ladies that CAN dress, but new york, they are just naturally HOT in shorts and a tee. i think i prefer that. anyhow, i fell in love with the city and you'll read how. get a snack cause it'll take awhile. i'll break my trip down into days.

SATURDAY

i left my house at 8:30ish in the morning and had no problems at the border. i had my expos cap in the passenger seat and the border officer noticed it and happily asked about expos merchandise. nice guy. like my last trip down, my drive had its share of monsoons. it would rain super hard for 5 minutes then clear up again. other than two pit stops to gas up and take a leak, i made it to my cousins before 3pm. they took me to a graduation party for dinner. my aunt assured me there would be girls there. but laughed at me when it turned out to be a high school graduation pool party. on the upside, they had a mean vegetarien lasagna. yum. soon left and napped back at home. my cousin jeremy and i copped yankee tickets for sunday afternoon and then he took me to a strip club. i'm not the biggest fan of strip clubs but i enjoyed myself. burnt more money than i wanted to but its all good. i told jer about the differences in montreal strip clubs and the lapdances and he was amped to check it out. hehehe. he's a good kid. an american whitewashed suburban jock, but still my little cousin. prime example of how your environment can shape your life. afterwards we made it back and called it a night.

SUNDAY

woke up real early in the morning cause we had to take an hour and a half bus ride into the city. the baseball game was at 1pm and i had to drop my luggage at the hostel before that. jer and i made it down with no problems, the bus leaving us at port authority, blocks down from times square. he didnt know much about the city, actually i knew more than he did. we took the subway, and i was glad to see that they had week-long passes for $25! i was prepared to burn $8 each day for day-long passes, so i saved a lot! i left my luggage at the front desk of the hostel as i was too early to check in, and with time to kill before the game, made our way back to time square to grab a quick bite. about this time, it started to rain mildly on and off. i was able to break in my new rain jacket. hehehe. anyhow we had mcdonalds and then made our way to grand central station to subway it to yankee stadium. we got there just in time and got to our yucky seats: Bleachers, Row Z, seats 3-4. these were the only ones available online. these were after all last minute tickets. not only were they pretty bad seats, but these seats go for $12 bucks face value, and let's just say, that's not what i paid for. anyhow, i enjoyed the game. i had bought a cincinnati cap for this game, but jer scared me that it wouldn't be a good idea. so i stuck with my expos cap. but at the game, there were plenty of cinci fans. for 5 innings, it was pretty lackluster. only hilight was pettitte getting out of a jam with the bases loaded and getting the strike out to end the inning. jer and i wanted to try the ballpark franks so we headed inside and that's when a monsoon came. everybody rushed in as we were biting into our hotdogs. it got hot and sweaty and packed real fast inside. i didn't want to wait so we left the game. i wasn't ever really a big baseball fan anyway. i wanted to treat my cousin to a sit-in dinner so i took him to applebees. we worked up an appetite by walking around time square. we were able to finish the baseball game at applebees' on their tvs. yanks won. we were both worn out from all the walking that day, and so i dropped him off at port authority so he can bus it back home. i went back to hostel to check in and settled in. my accomodations was top bunk in a room of twelve. thankfully they had lockers inside and one private bathroom to share. this may sound weak, but compared to the other hostel i stayed at last time, this was a comfort inn. i was down and out for the day.

MONDAY

showtime! actually no. after a tiring sunday, i wanted to use this day to chill out and relax and just take in the city. i woke up around 6ish and was able to shower and get ready as the room was still passed out. lookin cute and excited, i decided to head downtown and just take the day to walk back up to uptown. i started off at ground zero and wall steet. i then made my way up broadway. anything interesting that i saw i'd stop and photograph. from there i hit city hall park where it started raining and i took a break to wait it out by the fountain. 15 minutes later the rain stopped and i came across manhattan center and from there saw the brooklyn bridge. i didn't walk the entire bridge, but made it to the first tower thing before it started raining again. i made my way back and it was time for lunch at one of a million starbucks on the island. rested my feet and then continued on broadway thru chinatown and canal street. cause of the rainshower, it was pretty stuffy from the humidity at this point. now in soho i zigzagged around, backtracked even, to check out boutiques. i missed a bunch but i didnt really care. i had no plans of actually shopping inside any of these stores anyway. two in particular i thoroughly enjoyed were the apple store and the moma design store. the apple store is beautiful. not only that, in my entire trip there, i haven't seen so many hipsters in one spot than in that store. it was like a peer pressure party. lotsa hot girls too. the moma design store was the only store i spent more than 20 minutes inside. i was there more than an hour going through their knick knacks and books. and i could've easily spent a few bills buying their clever shit. *sigh. past soho i walked by the centre of architecture which i stepped inside but didn't explore cause i was thinking there's a cover charge so i left. past that i reached washington square park which was half underconstruction. lotsa of the places/attractions i was at had renovations being done which was kinda sad. again on broadway, i was tired from all the walking but i made it to times square where i found the nearest jamba juice and settled down for the rest of the afternoon with a protein berry workout + daily vitamin boost. hehehe. later on i met up with one of my high school buddies, Githaiga, who moved to harlem last year. off time square, he took me to a swanky restaurant bar with fine hostess' and bartender ladies in bikinis! hawaiian tropic zone. good times. we caught up and messed with the bikini ladies. of course, i fell in love with one of them. every hour they have a bikini contest and all customers are asked to vote. i kept voting for the girl from BRAZIL! there was one white chick who wore glasses and i fell for her too. but i voted for BRAZIL! yea, i kept yelling that out after a few beers. "YEA BRAZIL! OW!" and of course, the only one to show me any kind of love was the frign asian one. bleh. after running up a tab, we covered it and went to mcdonald's for cheap eats. hehehe. we made plans to meet up again and said peace. i got back to the hostel where i met a fruity black kid named Brandon from arizona who was making a move to new york to study fashion. real nice guy, but only cause he thought i was cute. *brushes shoulders off. yea, what can i say. anyhow i got to know him while i was chatting with the cute hostess at the front desk. afterwards, brandon, the black fruitcake told me she's into me. with that, i called it a productive day, showered and crashed.

TUESDAY

so much for a monday of relaxing, tuesday my body was in worse shape than before but i still did my tourist thing. this day i planned on visiting the american museum of natural history. honestly, i was real amped for the dinosaurs. and only for the dinosaurs. everything else, i pretty much skimmed. the earth/space section was interesting enough as well. along with my entrance pass, i had access to one of the imax shows: Cosmic Collisions. the imax movie is watched looking up at the ceiling of a dome room. i was pretty much watching this with classes of kids. and its hard no to have the same reactions as they did: "Ooooooooh!" and yes, i was lost most of the time in the museum. and yes, i kept finding myself working backgrounds through the exhibits. the main showcase was on horses, but i missed it. i was pretty tired after my tour through the dinosaur section. i was a little disappointed. i thought the dinosaurs would be displayed life-size with skin and eyes and stuff. but it was just fossils and bones. whatever, i left impressed.

for lunch, i had plenty of time to pick up a sandwich at subway and head back to the hostel. i ate up at the hostel' terrasse. beautiful view. i regret not takin pictures. after i took a much needed and deserved nap in my empty dorm room. i was all aces afterwards. it's about 4 or 5pm at this point and i made my way to the empire state building. it was quite a walk from penn station. but this whole trip, the weather was perfect. it was warm, but i was comfortble in jeans and a tee. it would rain, but the showers never last longer than an hour. most of the time they last 15 minutes. i really appreciated the weather's cooperation. my citypass helped me skip the ticket line and jump right into the real line. took half an hour at most to get up top and it's amazing. i went around the deck like four times and took a hundred pictures which im sure all look the same. hehehe. i spent maybe half an hour taking pictures and a good hour looking out towards the hudson river where the sun was descending. beautiful. i was glad i was alone, even though there were other people around, it felt like i was up there by myself, on top of the world. beautiful. as i reached street level, the sun was pretty much setting which i wish i stayed longer to see. i was pretty tired and everything on my itinerary was closed. i just wanted a place to be entertained for a couple of hours, with food, cool down and rest my feet. so with nothing to do i headed to time square and found my way to a movie theater, AMC 25. i was always self-conscious about watching movies by myself but this time, i didnt mind at all. and after this, i'll be doing so more often. hehehe. i watched the incredible hulk. the theater was pretty empty, maybe thirty people tops. on my way there i picked up fruits (plums) off a street vendor and washed em in the bathrooms there and snacked on em.

the movie was alright. im a big fan of ang lee's hulk and didn't expect much from this revision. this was much darker and angrier, and liv tyler was real pretty in this movie. there's a nice nod for a sequel as i believe the Leader is created in the middle of the chaos of this one. and robert downey jr.'s cameo as tony stark was icing too. i still prefer ang lee's hulk, but this was good too. more action and more rage. only thing i wish they kept was hulk growing stronger and bigger as he gets angrier. just to show how his rage is manifested. ed norton was a bit too cool for bruce tho. anyhow, the movie did its job in both entertaining and relaxing me. i made my way back to the hostel, showered and crashed for the night.

WEDNESDAY

every morning, i'd get up at 6ish to shower first. i did and made my way to battery park, the southern tip of manhattan to do the statue of liberty trip. again with the citypass, i was able to cut my wait in line in half and enjoyed the ferry ride over to the statue. it was a rocky ride at first but settled down and became real fun. as i got to the statue, i couldn't help but think it was small. i was expecting it to be much larger. but it was still impressive. i only did one circle around it on foot while takin pictures. after an hour or so walkin around, i was more hungry than tired, so i had lunch there and picnicked by the statue under a tree. i took my time, ate, let my feet breath, and gave my dad a call to check in. i was a lil homesick but i pushed through it easy enough. the tour included a stop at ellis island for the immigration museum but i skipped that and just took pictures aboard the ship. i got back to battery park, went through bowling green and to the new york stock exchange. at this point, according to my photos and my camera, i blank out and end up at union square. i dont remember how i got there. i dont think i'd walk that much. but then again i dont remember taking a subway to union square. anyhow, they have an open market in the square and i got myself a raspberry/nut scone for a buck. once again i had nothing to do.

it was around 2 oclock and didnt think i'd have enough time to do a museum. so i decided to do another movie. hehehe. i went back to 42nd and across from the AMC25 is the Regal Movie house, and changing it up went there with a new bag of plums again (this time 4 for a $1.25). hehehe. i watched The Love Guru starring Mike Myers. it was alright. he should really stop doing movies. he's like a white eddie murphy. doing these gimmicky character movies. they both should stop. the movie had its moments and justin timberlake was entertaining as a quebecer. but i never knew anything about this 'french pizza' business. that shit is gross. and i really wished jessica alba was my girlfriend. one day. one day. i finished all my plums, the movie finally ended and i get out and it's not even 6.

i know many of you may use all this time to shop or eat or something, but i just can't do that. i didnt want to waste time or energy or money doing that. i headed back to my hostel and met one of my roommates who happened to wear a canuck tee. turns out he is from b.c. and we started talkin hockey, canada, new york, and the hostel. nice guy. i was thinking of doing shakespeare in the park, but this time i left everything in my locker. no bag, no camera, no cap. just my wallet and subway pass in my pockets. it was a beautiful early evening. starting at 7pm, i walked all the way down broadway from 96th just takin in the city, passing hundreds of starbucks and subways (sandwich not metro), and the lincoln center where suits and dresses walked about. i eventually made it to Columbus Circle. beautiful columbus circle. corner edge of central park and location of Time Warner Center. inside are fancy shops like Benetton and whatever, but at the lower floor is Whole Foods Market aka heaven. An upscale shopping market that has a sushi bar inside and the icing, a Jamba Juice too. but the great thing about the market is that it has this buffet type thing. island bars of fresh and health-minded food, from hot soups to cold vegetables mixes and tofu recipes and indian specials and a dessert bar, and you are provided with a range of boxes for you to contain your choices where they charge about $8 per lb. i wished i took a picture. my box was full of green. anyhow with my food, i had to lineup in the express where they'll weigh your food at the counter, but this line is 5 times longer than the regular lines. this line snaked through half the market. after that i took my dinner outside and ate it in columbus circle; ladies everywhere, skaters rolling around, runners resting, the fountains splashing and stuff. beautiful. rested and fully satisfied, it was time for my dessert. i went back in for a razzmatazz + daily vitamin boost at jamba juice. with juice in hand, i began my trek back to my hostel through central park. i started around 8:30 and there were plenty of people running and walking and such, but by 9pm, with the sun setting, people began to walk faster and headed for the nearest exit out of the park. i knew the park was dangerous at night, but not to that extent. i made it out eventually, with my juice finished, i was halfway through my trek up central park west street. at this point, i was dying. i was walking real funny and every step really hurt. so bad i made it worse by zigzagging tryin to find a subway but couldn't (didnt have my map). i finally got back, fighting back tears of pain, showered real quick and finally crashed. *sigh.

THURSDAY

this morning i woke up at 8 and was second in line for the shower. i had 3 attractions left on my itinerary and wanted to do the guggenheim museum and the met this day and save all friday for the moma. i reached the guggenheim and turns out its closed on thursdays (and under renovations too). so i went to the met because it is one of the biggest museums in the world. and maybe squeeze the guggenheim in after moma on the friday. it opens at 9:30am and i got there at 9:20 and there was already a line spilling unto its front steps. it wasn't so bad. i check my bag and kept only my camera. the museum is disgustingly huge. i wish i could say i visited everything. but my feet started hurting quick. there was a special exhibition show called Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy. It's a small show but very cool. It mainly consisted of iconic costumes of superheroes and finding relative characteristics in today's fashion. For instance, Flash's skin tight pajamas were being compared to a running suit by nike. It was nice to see the costumes used in the movies like Spiderman's and Batman's suit. You could really tell they're expensive cause the spidey suit looked paper thin and delicate. The catwoman suit from batman returns (my favorite batman movie ever) was on display too. Michelle Pfiefer must've been so tiny. Next to it was the modern art section and i never really got to explore the rest of museum after that. Famous paintings galore. I was happy, but also overwhelmed. I was hoping to discover artists, get familiar with the unfamiliar, but i was just overwhelmed. And i didnt have enough time to not only look through all of them, but to stop and examine a single one. So at certain points, i was just simply photographing away. anyhow, this blog is long enough without my critique of the paintings. so i'll just say that matisse is a genius. his fauves paintings, simple and non-threatening, with its childlike quality and radical colors is what i see as pushing painting forward. kudos. I went through the medieval and european paintings and other sections like that, but no matter what i was able to see, i knew i was missing on a hundred other things. One thing was the "Jeff Koons on the Roof" which i forgot and honestly didn't know was even open (depends on the weather cause it's on the roof). anyhow i was tired and hungry so i captured as much as i could and left after 2-3 hours of the met. hungry, i made my way back to columbus circle back to the whole foods market and tried the sushi. it was okay, fresh, but nothing special. that and the accompanied soy sauce packs were mad lacking. and yes, i had jamba juice again: 3g energizer + energy booster. while eating/resting, i decided to tackle the moma too that day. and take on the guggenheim the next day. but i only thought so because i may have sunbconsciously knew i wasn't going to do the guggenheim. so off to moma and enjoyment ensued. like the met, the lists of artist's is disgusting. cezanne, kadinksy, picasso, manet, monet, jasper johns, giacometti, frank stella, de kooning, van gogh, dali, duchamp, matisse, warhol, rothko, etc. blah blah blah blah blah. it was just too much. sadly, i was looking for basquiat's work but between the met and moma, only found a couple of drawings of his at moma. disappointing. well the moma is 6 floors of modern and contemporary art presented in a design-conscious space. this was the easiest of the museum's to navigate as you'd have to circle around the floor, through the exhibits and in the end find access to the next floor down. thank god. also helps to make sure you don't miss anything. anyways i snapped a lot more photos here and a hilight was falling in love with a girl rocking cowboy boots with shorts. *sigh. we played eye tag but i knew i smelled like ass and felt a lil nerdy with my camera. the duchamp work was a welcome surprise, godfather of the avant-garde and dada approach. the prime example of challenging art with his thinking. did i mention i fell in love with a girl in cowboy boots and shorts? *sigh. hehehe. the moma was surprisingly short and easy to go through in a satisfactory manner, doing so under two hours. i got out around 5ish (closing time was 5:30) and made my way to rockefeller center and sat outside resting for about an hour. i got back to the hostel and made plans to meet up with Githaiga again. I was able to shower and met him soon after. we went for eats and drinks at good ol' ESPNZone in time square. G-dawg wanted to catch the NBA draft which proved to be lotsa fun. i was glad i caught march madness fever months ago cause i was able to follow the draft better than i expected. good shit. my man CDR from memphis went in the second round to NJ. his teammate Derrick Rose went first pick to Chicago. cool! leaving i wanted a picture with Githaiga, and down in the metro i tried askin strangers. a girl passed by and i hollered but she bolted away as she saw me reach into my bag (to pull out my camera). hehehe. funny. Githaiga was able to stop a dude and got us a pic. thanks! we said peace and that was it. i got back to the hostel and fixed my things cause it was my last nite in the city. did so and crashed.

FRIDAY

my last day in the city. checked out once i was ready, around 9 even though checkout time was 11. anyhow i left my luggage at the front desk and went into the city to chill and relax. i had plans to meet up with my friend Twee for dinner, so i had time to kill. a whole day really. i could've done the guggenheim, or gone out to the brooklyn museum (had a murakami exhibition), or done soho again to actually buy stuff, but i just did breakfast at starbucks and read the paper. afterwards i had to get my luggage and drop it off at my uncle's work way way uptown, edge of manhattan. it wasn't ghetto, but it was a real latino hood so i watched my step. i dropped it off and made my way back and settled in bryant park to read the paper some more. it was getting hot out as the sun was reaching high into the sky, so i decided to take in another movie.

WANTED just came out the night before so i went for that. i got more plums again to snack on, hehehe. the movie had it's style points but it wasn't as cool as i was hoping for. angelina jolie killed it tho. like damn. she didn't have to say anything and yet exude so much charm (e.g. her standing in wesley gibson's way in the factory). meowr! the action was pretty unbalanced. the whole jumping through the window scene and shooting through a guy' head was so fantastical that it looked cheap amidst a movie based in reality. funny how all three movies i watched were all average. and im usually easily pleased with movies.

anyhow, for lunch i had subway and once again did jamba juice (heart defender + daily vitamin boost) at time warner center and roamed around the center. the day before i had bought the required 'i <3 NY' tee for myself and my dad. and somehow i ran out of tees so i had to bust it out this day. i eventually met up with twee at penn station and were both on board for korean bbq in korean town. we caught up and both geeked out by takin photos of our food. we started eating at 8 but we were tight for time cause i had a bus to catch before 10pm. like githaiga, she filled me in on her own living experience out there and it was enlightening. we parted ways at port authority and joked about how we'd do it again when we'd switch places. she reassures me that life there is great for her career, but misses her life back home in mtl. while i on the other hand would love to be in her position. well the future is bright. i said goodbye to twee and to the city that was my home for the week.

and then i get back to stupid blauvelt new york...

my cousin jer kept in touch during day, even makin plans to catch a midnight movie once he picked me up at the bus stop. the busride was sketchy cause i wasnt too sure where i was supposed to get off and it was pitch black outside. on top of that, my cell died as i was telling him a) i was in the bus b) my cell is dying and c) im on the way. i only failed to mention to go ahead and expect me at the bus stop. but the first three pieces of info should have been sufficient enough. i was able to get off at the right spot and hoped jer would be there waiting for me. nope. jer has the tendency not to listen and at times would need to be told repeatedly before he absorbed the information. so i wasnt surprised but straight up mad at his flaw. with no cell and no clue to where his house is (which is a five minute drive from the bus stop) i panicked. i kept trying my cell but it was completely dead. i looked around for a pay phone with no luck. a few blocks down i came across a lil shitty bar. and walkin upto it i could hear it was real rowdy inside. i knew if i wasnt careful, i was going to get jumped. so i dumped my bag in a bush nearby and went in. it was full of drunk college kids. i went straight to the bartender and asked if they had a pay phone and he looks at me if im crazy and says no. WTF. a drawback in an age of cellphones. i bail and head back to the bus stop picking up my bag along the way. as i walk back, im desperate now so start flaggin down passing cars. nobody would stop. i get back to the bus stop, i ditch my bag in a bush again and this time more aggressively start waving down cars yelling for a cell phone. its now an hour since i got off the bus. eventually one young dude in a tie rolling in an suv stops and helps me out with his cell. i dial up jer and snap at him to pick me up. my cousin val picks me up and tells me that jer is at a frign party. i was pissed. i spent nights up in the city and not once felt scared. one night in frign blauvelt, new york and im checking my back every minute. i could've really been hard and frign raped jer with words about ditchin me. i know he's young, but his mistake could've really hurt me. i honestly could've have gone off on the kid. val knew it. she'd let him know. i went straight to bed.

SATURDAY

this day i head back home to mtl. i woke up around 9ish and meet up with my aunt and uncle at the kitchen table. they were concerned about last night and i told them what happened. at this point, after a nights sleep, i was pretty much over it. but they understood where i was coming from. i shower, had some breakfast and watched some morning tv. my aunt and uncle left to do some groceries. my baby cousin vanessa woke up first and she came to hang. val came down after. eventually jer came down. during the week we had made plans to check out the palisades mall this morning before i left. he was distant, so i hugged the kid telling him i hated him last night but i'm okay. i squashed it cause i didnt want to leave hating on the kid. we took pictures and checked out the mall and again i bought nothing. bought ice on the way back though. we get back, i set up my car and i say my goodbyes.

my uncle is workin in the background in all these pics hehehe.

the weather during the week was real nice, but this day it was scorching hot. i think i just missed the summer heat wave. thank god. the way back was pretty smooth. though i had to pit stop more than i have liked just to use the bathroom. even with gas prices, i still think $100 on gas for a roundtrip is affordable. i left just before 2pm and finally got back home before 8pm. i had no trouble at the border even though i declared nothing (cause i honestly had nothing to declare). nice to be back home. but i'll be going back. i have vacation in november...

the end.

RECAP

i love new york. i'm gunning to move out there, manhattan specifically. the ladies out there are beautiful. and a couple of em were feelin me hehehe. i thought montreal was very ethnically diverse, but new york is totally on a higher level. i was honestly a lil scared going down there with all the potential danger, but now im cool with it. there is so much to do there. i was thinkin how i should be this adventurous here in montreal. but i dont know why. could be the language or the fact im on vacation, but yea i realized i should get out more often even on my own. well anyhow, new york is boss...

p.s. you can check out all my 300+ pictures at my flickr here...
it'll be months before im able to upload em all. sorry.
(i got a new flickr account cause i forgot my login info for the last one)
