3 MC's & 1 DJ!

beastie boys were in the house at the bell center and i went to check it out with my brother from another mother, Terence! got tickets off ebay for half price and had a pretty good view from the reds. overall, an enjoyable experience.

montreal's own chromeo opened to a less than enthused crowd, but they sure got my foot tapping. surprisingly they 'bag'-checked my schoolbag which had both our cameras so i had to settle for my cellphone cam (sorry).

the intermission between the two acts seemed real long, but once the lights dimmed, the whole arena erupted! the one n only mixmaster mike strolled out easy and began cutting like there was no tomorrow, warming up an already hot crowd til three middle age one-time homeboys rocking business suits jumped out spitting rhymes....!

only to fall silent a minute later as the entire set blew a fuse! hype meter went from 100 to 0 in a few heartbeats. dumbass crowd did their "o-lei o-lei o-lei's" (which i hate...) which then died out as they figured it all wasnt an act.

they eventually started back up and did they're opening routine, but the damage was pretty much done. crowd of arms were no longer up and i got shy and the hits they sang like "remote control" just seemed flat. but they got me jumping with "ch-check it out!" and "body movin".

either they ARE as old as they are and ARE losing their edge, or that blown fuse setback killed the vibe, but my high expectations died. Mike D's hair was whack. MCA's old, lost his breath easy. but AD-Rock was money. do have to say, their flow is still tight. but i do smell retirement.

a surprise positive was mixmaster mike who i personally thought kept the crowd in it with his skills and beats. and money mark (keyboardist) was wild'n out! i think he was drunk. at one point, during one of their punk songs, jumping around like mad, he dove and crashed into his keyboards! awesome!

as i watched him, at that very moment, everything became clear and i smirked realizing, i would've done the same. hehehe.

shit picked up only like the last half hour of the show and after they did their encore. i was glad they did "intergalactic" but not as hype as i expected. they ended with "sabotage" (hoyea!) and im pretty sure the frign moshing on the floor killed somebody.

and that was that. this youtube video right here i believe epitomizes the ESSENCE that is the beastie boys. enjoy!

y a-t-il

yesterday i checked out galerie sandra goldie before (n near to) work to catch my PTNG 300 teacher's exhibition. only found out about it yesterday at school off a flyer on the ground. sad. supposed to end today, but it was extended til the end of the week. kinda got lost cause the gallery' website located itself on the corner of greene and maisonneuve, though it surely wasnt. more like in the middle of the block. and there's like 5 other galleries on that one block. not only that, its on top of another gallery...

yea, i accidentally went to the bottom one first. kitschy paintings and grandmas buying them threw me off. an assistant (or manager, dunno) cheerfully directed me to the stairs beside their door. good sport.

the gallery was a real nice space. small. very well lit. i was greeted by a nice lady at her computer (sandra goldie? dunno) then made my tour. the website has the major paintings available to view online. she had a few paintings and a sprawl of work on paper. enjoyable. raises a lot of questions that i'm sure to ask her next class. most of which starts with "Why...?" go figure.

hands up! guns up!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KEVLO!

went to the Osheaga Music Fest for sunday' shows to celebrate! the festivals big headliner were the Smashing Pumpkins, and had performances by Damien Rice, Feist, Interpol, Macy Gray, Gotan Project, Explosions in the Sky, Santogold, Bloc Party, and a plethora of other bands. Amy Winehouse sadly missed out.

the weekend long event pass was steep, and between the two nights, sunday' lineup was easily won over by one particular showcase. i honestly did this fest just for this artist, and all the other shows were just BONUS. i did it for...

ma'ahfuckin' M. I. A.!

but first, we caught the Arctic Monkeys and enjoyed their set, but not as much as i enjoyed the female audience in attendance. :)

afterwards, Macy Gray performed, of which we were to skip and leave, but couldn't. she was awesome. great hype. tight band. she got me dancing. i'd so book her for a wedding or something of that nature. well played Macy Gray, well played.

to kill time before M.I.A. we checked out the rest of the fest (n did some intreprative dance), and caught a couple of songs of You Say Party! We Say Die! (pretty catchy) then we waited for Interpol while Gotan Project (chill) performed across the way. Interpol took too long and we left to grab a spot for M.I.A.

M.I.A. performed and definitely killed. no surprise. it was mad fun, til the crowd turned too rowdy. a lil fight broke out even, got squashed but that was a downer. that and the frign late comers cutting in front of an already packed crowd, come on now. whatever, Maya i love you, let's hold hands.

to end the night, Bloc Party closed the fest. cant go wrong with bloc party.

first wave

so here goes. ima noob to this whole act of bloggin, so humour me (but be gentle).

im takin 3 classes this fall semester, 2 of which are year long in length. i have already my first assignments to toil over.

PTNG 300: first i have painting 300 and with a straightforward project to help us ease into school mode again. really, we just have to show up ready to work. we'll be working from a nude male model (i know...) in figurative painting. no big.

ARTT: my semester long class is art theory: Ideas and Issues, though i prefer the course outline title, Reproductive Media/ Contemporary Art. and it better describes the classes focus. so far, i just have readings and an exhibition visit at the MoFA which im particularly excited for.

PTNG 399: last i have Painting and Pop Art. i had high expectations for this class. figured it would be fun, but so far it just seems... artsy. full of characters in that class. and the first assignment is just as 'off'. aside from filling out a form of personal interest, the first project is to produce work that speaks of painting (but isnt) and pushes the 'borders' of what is art, WHILST having functionality.... .... .... challenging, but in an annoying sort of way. this project has won my focus.

there it goes. fun.

dslrrrrrrr

not to seem too premature about this whole notion of blogging my projects and stuff, but i'll be able to share em as soon as i purchase myself, a brand new spanking D-SLR camera to photograph with.

shits price hefty so, stay frosty. its in the mail. soon.

sorry for the inconvenience.

starting line

howdy'all.

im a 24 year old brown person in my 2nd year of concordia university's studio arts major in montreal. in the late evenings, i am a Proof Service Agent for Symcor. fancy shmancy title for data entry clerk for a banking company.

as i was sitting in my first day of classes in art theory, i thought now would be a perfect time to document and share my experience and work as an aspiring 'artist'.

first off, im pretty dumb. straight up. my knowledge in the culture that is art is very limited. im the quiet type in class to sit in the back and nod my head. though talent does go a long way, so i can hold my own.

now the purpose behind this venture is to satisfy the curiosity of friends and family concerning my practice. and after having sat thru the first day of classes, gone thru the course outlines, i have a load of upcoming projects that would be interesting to share.

aside from my school experience, and seeing how this is a personal blog, there will be posts of my adventures, thoughts, and such. i'll be on a strict diet of everything and anything from this point on.

bookmark me too. and show some love, leave em comments. thanks.

let's do this.
